DECATUR, Ga. -- A brand new Recorders Court courtroom will open at the DeKalb County Recorders Court Wednesday morning.

The new courtroom came about in the creative inspiration of Chief Judge Nelly Withers and her executive team. The judge decided to convert a storage area into a courtroom to improve court capacity and reduce wait times.

Judge Withers, her family and courthouse employees painted the new courtroom in their free time, while a police officer with carpentry skills built the judge's bench while he was off-duty.

The courtroom will officially be unveiled at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Cases will be heard in the courtroom immediately, with full implementation underway by October. This additional courtroom will result in 25 percent extra capacity in Recorders Court.
