Bestselling YA author to speak in Decatur

DECATUR, Ga. -- Popular author Laurie Halse Anderson will hold a talk and book signing at the Decatur Library this month.

Anderson is best known for her novel Speak, which was made into a 2004 movie with Twilight star Kristen Stewart. She also wrote Wintergirls, which tells the story of a high school student suffering from anorexia.

Her latest novel, The Impossible Knife of Memory, is about a teenager named Hayley and her relationship with her father Andy, an Iraq War veteran suffering from PTSD.

Anderson will be at the library on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. Her visit is sponsored by Little Shop of Stories and the Georgia Center for the Book.

The Decatur Library is located at 215 Sycamore Street.

Author Sue Monk Kidd to hold 2 book signings

ATLANTA -- Bestselling author Sue Monk Kidd will hold two readings and book signings in metro Atlanta in January.

Kidd is best known for writing The Secret Life of Bees, which was made into a 2008 movie starring Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson and Queen Latifah. She is also the author of The Mermaid Chair.

Her third novel, The Invention of Wings, like her previous two books, is a celebration of women.

Fulton Commission Chairman honored by Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County Commission Chairman, District 1, John H. Eaves received the Grady Champion Award during the 2nd Annual “Honoring Healthcare Champions Awards.”

Chairman Eaves was one of eight community leaders, medical professionals and non-profit executives honored by the Hospital Authority for their leadership in efforts to support Grady Hospital and build healthier communities.

The awards dinner followed the 2013 Health Summit, which brought governmental leaders and healthcare professionals together to discuss healthcare issues affecting Fulton and Dekalb counties.

The Healthcare Champions were honored for research, advocacy, donations and inspired leadership.  Standing with Chairman Eaves (center) were Pete Correll (left), Chairman of the Grady Memorial Hospital Corporation and Thomas Dortch, Chairman of the Fulton-Dekalb Hospital Authority Board of Trustees.

ATLANTA -- Many of metro Atlanta's most talented performers, directors and theater crew members descended on DeKalb County Monday night for the 2013 Suzi Bass Awards.

Every year, the Suzis honor the best theater productions in the area. Awards are given in two areas -- plays and musicals.

The Aurora Theatre's staging of Les Misérables was one of this year's big winners. It took home five Suzi Awards, including Outstanding Musical Production, Outstanding Director of a Musical and Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical.
