Meet the Atlanta Students Who Are Part of the 2011 Disney's Dreamers Academy

I had a great time chatting with lots of kids from all over the country that were selected to be apart of Disney’s Dreamers Academy 2011 with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine! The kids were full of excitement to be at Disneyworld! Over 4,000 kids entered but only 111 were picked. Wow, that must have been tough to pick the kids but I can tell from their smiles and personalities that they were honored to chosen.

I met several girls that were from Georgia and you know that I had to chat with them. I met Ms. Simone from Eastpoint, Taiya from Lawrenceville and Nautica from Atlanta. Ms.Nautica is a freshman at Centennial High School. She wants to be an actress and a singer. She was so sweet and shy but had the prettiest smile ever.

John Bayne hosts book talk for "Gravely Concerned: Southern Writers' Graves"

John Bayne hosts book talk for "Gravely Concerned: Southern Writers' Graves"

DECATUR -- (Georgia Center for the Book at the  DCPL)  We were forced to cancel John Bayne's appearance back in January because of snow and ice, but we're planning to give this Atlanta author a much warmer welcome this time!

Bayne visits us with an intriguing new book, Gravely Concerned: Southern Writers' Graves. Published by Clemson University Press, it's a surprising look at the final resting places of more than 150 writers from the South, authors ranging from William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Thomas Wolfe and Flannery O'connor to Gordon Googler ("The Bard of the Congaree"), Christian Reid and Virginia Frazer Boyle.

The author patiently and carefully spent several years seeking out their graves -- many quite difficult to locate -- and took black and white photographs for the book, which he will show during his lecture.

Local teen wins $42,600 on Jeopardy!

ATLANTA -- She may not have won, but a Chamblee High School sophomore still took home $42,600 from the Jeopardy! Teen Tournament.

Kailyn LaPorte of Decatur came in second in the tournament finals, which wrapped up Wednesday night.

"Probably the majority of the winnings will go to my college fund, but I'm probably going to buy some concert tickets, buy a couple things for myself," she told 11Alive News.

The 15-year-old was one of two Metro Atlanta teens to earn a spot in the tournament and was the youngest competitor this year.

It hasn't been easy getting there. She says her involvement with her school's quiz bowl team helped her prepare. Her team just won the Georgia Academic Team Association AAAA State Championship on Saturday.

DWM to Host Rain Barrel Workshop

DWM to Host Rain Barrel Workshop

DECATUR - The DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management (DWM) will host a rain barrel workshop for DeKalb citizens on Saturday, March 12, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Tucker Recreation Center, 4898 Lavista Road in Tucker.

Collecting rainwater in rain barrels for use during dry months is an excellent way to conserve water and reduce water bills.  During the workshop, citizens will be instructed on rain barrel maintenance and water conservation landscaping.

The rain barrel workshop is open to the first 30 DeKalb County residents who sign up.  This is a “hands on” workshop where residents will make their own rain barrels with DWM assistance.

The cost of the workshop is $30, which includes all the materials to make your very own barrel.
