Local teen wins $42,600 on Jeopardy! | News
ATLANTA -- She may not have won, but a Chamblee High School sophomore still took home $42,600 from the Jeopardy! Teen Tournament.
Kailyn LaPorte of Decatur came in second in the tournament finals, which wrapped up Wednesday night.
"Probably the majority of the winnings will go to my college fund, but I'm probably going to buy some concert tickets, buy a couple things for myself," she told 11Alive News.
The 15-year-old was one of two Metro Atlanta teens to earn a spot in the tournament and was the youngest competitor this year.
It hasn't been easy getting there. She says her involvement with her school's quiz bowl team helped her prepare. Her team just won the Georgia Academic Team Association AAAA State Championship on Saturday.
"I had a couple of trivia books, and I would take those to school and ask my friends to quiz me," she said. "I really had to train myself to answer in the form of a question."
Laughing, she said she eventually got so used to it that she still sometimes answers everyday questions in the form of a question.
The big question on the minds of her friends and family for months was if she won. The entire tournament was taped over the span of just a few days in Los Angeles in December.
"It was really, really hard when I first got back because my friends all wanted to know how it went," she said. "I had to just keep telling them 'I can't tell you.'"
Even though she knew the outcome, Kailyn said she enjoyed watching the tournament with loved ones these last few weeks.
"They would cheer really loudly every time I got a question right," Kailyn said.
She got plenty of those.
Kailyn will join 11Alive News Today at 6 a.m. and the Daily 11 at 7 on Thursday.
Teens interested in competing in the next Jeopardy! Teen Tournament can register on the Jeopardy! website.
Jeopardy airs weeknights at 7:30 p.m. on 11Alive's sister station, MyAtlTV.
