FBI: Dollar store bandit robbed a bank

TUCKER, Ga -- The FBI has a federal warrant for the arrest of a man accused of more than two dozen armed robberies in metro Atlanta. The so-called "Dollar Store Bandit" has been targeting Family Dollar stores and Dollar General stores in four counties.

Now the FBI says Artavius Brown, 23, has upped the ante by robbing a bank at gunpoint. FBI Special Agent Stephen Emmett said Brown walked into the PNC Bank on Main Street in Tucker on June 21, 2013. "He advised them he wanted to cash a check, put a book bag up on the counter and from that point on he pulled out a weapon and announced a robbery," he said.

Brown was identified shortly after DeKalb County Police made a passionate plea to the public to help them identify a suspect in a surveillance photo from one of 24 dollar store robberies. "We have to make sure that everyone remains safe and we have to get this guy off the street as soon as we can," DeKalb Police Chief Cedric Alexander said on June 12, 2012.

More than a month later Brown is still on the street and apparently still committing robberies. "It tells us that he's basically a one man crime spree," said Emmett.

Thirteen of the 24 dollar store robberies were in DeKalb County where the bank robbery occurred. Eleven more dollar store robberies connected to Brown happened in Fulton, Gwinnett and Henry counties.

Emmett said there could be more that they haven't connected to Brown. "We're stepping up the hunt for Mr. Brown and the concern is that we'll see him again, that he'll rob again," he said.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $7,000 reward for the arrest of Brown. If you know where he is call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477).
