Postal worker killed in 'freak accident' in DeKalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities in DeKalb County say a postal worker was killed in a "freak accident" Saturday, after a falling tree smashed into the worker's truck.

Emergency officials responded to the address of the Mystery Valley Golf Club in the 6000 block of Shaddow Rock Dr. around 1 p.m. Saturday.

According to reports, trees in the area had collapsed due to heavy winds, causing another unhealthy 40-foot pine tree to break at the base and fall across the roadway and onto the roof of the vehicle. Officials have confirmed that the incident was weather-related.

Workers from the public golf course spotted the accident in passing and called 911. Both DeKalb Police and the Atlanta Police Department are investigating the the accident.

In a statement from the United States Postal Service, officials said their hearts were "heavy with the loss of a postal team member"  and that they extended "prayers and deepest sympathy to his family."

The driver has not been identified pending notification of the family, but is said to have been a 36-year-old male.
