DECATUR, GA (WXIA) -- The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office is making the rounds on Halloween to registered sex offenders' homes to make sure they are following the rules.

Unlike some jurisdictions, DeKalb only requires that registered offenders verify they are in compliance with the law. As part of that compliance, they are not permitted to decorate the exteriors of their homes to attract the attention of trick-or-treaters and not opening their doors to youngsters on Halloween.

"The safety of citizens -- especially our children -- is our priority during this commemoration," said DeKalb Sheriff Jeffrey Mann. "We want everyone to be aware of our activity and to know that it is in the community's best interest."

In addition, the sheriff's office will work with the county's probation office to monitor the 17 persons in the county determined to be "sexual predators" and must wear ankle monitors wherever they go.

In some counties in Georgia, sex offenders are required to spend the evening on Halloween in jail.

Parents can find out where sex offenders live by going on the GBI Website and entering an address or zip code. The site will generate a list of sex offenders in the area. Click here for more: http://gbi.georgia.gov/georgia-sex-offender-registry
