2 men in critical condition following shooting, pastors meet about rising crime

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Two people are in critical condition at Grady Hospital following a shooting in DeKalb County.

The incident began Tuesday night inside a house, located off of West Austin Court, where a possible gun sale was taking place. An argument broke out between two men inside the house before a woman told them to go outside.

The argument continued outside where shots were fired. One man was shot in the abdomen twice, while the other was shot in the face.

The woman drove the man shot in the abdomen to a local QuikTrip, located off of Covington Highway.

She ran in and told the clerk a man had been shot in the stomach. An off duty officer jumped in to action and called other people to his rescue.

In response to incidents like this, more than 100 Pastors and Community Leaders met Wednesday to address the surging crime rates in one of the highest crime areas in DeKalb County.

According to the DeKalb County Police Department's Crime Statistics, just about every category of violent crime is up from 2014 levels in the south precinct of the county:

  • 2015 DeKalb County Crime Rates:
  • Homicides - up 11%
  • Aggravated assaults - up 22% (entire county)
  • Rape up - 33%
    Business robberies - up a dramatic 44%

Pastor Steven N. Dial, Sr. of Rainbow Park Baptist Church in Decatur says, "We are deeply concerned about the crime problem in DeKalb County." Pastor Dial continues, "As faith leaders, we have come together to strengthen the spirit of neighbors in DeKalb County and send a message to criminals. We have faith that God will intervene and we believe that we can come together as one force to fight back against crime."

The meeting took place on the 2900 Block of Ember Dr. at Candler Road for a press conference to address DeKalb County's surging crime rate and their plans for involvement in the education of DeKalb County's youth and politics.
