Family says DeKalb man is hero killed by police

DECATUR, GA (WXIA) – His family says he was a hero who was killed like he was a violent criminal. Now, they want to know why.

On December 29, Kevin Davis came home to find his girlfriend stabbed. He called DeKalb 911 for help. Later, he heard a noise, thinking the attacker has returned.

He gets his gun to confront the would-be intruder, who turns out to be a police officer – and upon seeing Davis with a gun, shoots first.

Community leaders and activists converged on the DeKalb County Courthouse, demanding an independent Georgia Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the shooting.

"His family says Davis was a hero who died alone in police custody, despite their attempts to see him," said the family's attorney, Mawuli Davis.

DeKalb Police say their investigation into the shooting incident continues – and when it is done, they said they will turn it over to the district attorney.

The district attorney's office on Thursday said they will conduct a separate investigation when police finish theirs. Typically, any time there is a police-involved shooting in DeKalb County, their investigators go to the scene as well, to take notes first hand.

11Alive News was not able to confirm Thursday evening, whether or not that was done in this case, but it is standard operating procedure for the DA's office.
