Raise Your Voice: Following nephew's killing, woman works to stop youth violence
News

DECATUR, Ga. -- Fatimah Jewel Chandler is on a mission to save lives. It's been nearly one year since her 17-year-old nephew was killed, a victim of gun violence. His accused killer was only 18 years old.

"The community lost two young people that day," Chandler said.

On Sunday, July 27th, she plans to fill the Saratoga Lake Community Clubhouse with teens, just like her nephew, in hopes of helping them avoid the same mistake. Named in honor of her nephew, the Kamau Project begins with a day-long conference, free of charge, geared toward kids and teens ages 12-18.

Guest speakers range from attorneys and motivational speakers to a juvenile probation officer. They will talk to the teens about topics including conflict resolution, anger management, negotiation and bullying.

The event will take place at 3575 Oakvale Road in Decatur. The event is free of charge, but participants must register ahead of time. For more information, contact Chandler at jewelchandler@yahoo.com or 678-595-7795.

If you can't attend the conference, you can still get involved; Chandler is forming a mentorship program and needs male volunteers to step up and become mentors. Contact Chandler for more information.
