DeKalb County goes 6-0 in first round of state basketball playoffs | News
Five girls' and one boys' high school basketball teams from DeKalb County picked up first round state playoff victories highlighted by a Miller Grove sweep at home on Tuesday.
The Miller Grove Lady Wolverines (23-5) got 15 points each from senior guards Tashi Thompson and Katie Hunt to pull away from the Pope Lady Greyhounds (19-10) for a 67-49 victory in Class AAAAA girls' state playoff action.
Miller Grove closed out the first half with baskets by Klarissa Weaver and Thompson to push a slim 23-20 lead to 27-20 at the break.
A 22-point third quarter proved to be the game clincher as a 17-5 run to start the second half put the Miller Grove up by 19 points and Pope was never able to threaten the rest of the way. Thompson had five of her 15 points in the run while Aniefiok Udofia hit for four.
Miller Grove led by as much as 24 in the fourth quarter.
Klarissa Weaver added 12 points and 8 rebounds for No. 3 Miller Grove which moves on to face No. 9 Allatoona (18-7) which defeated Flowery Branch 55-49 to advance. The two teams scheduled to play at Allatoona on Friday.
Kierra Henry had a game high 28 points to lead Pope.
The No. 1 ranked Wolverines (26-3) used a pair of double-digit runs in the third quarter to put away the Sequoyah Chiefs 79-57 to advance to the second round.
Sequoyah had used a late surge in the first half to trail only 33-27 at the half, but Miller Grove opened the second half on a 10-0 fueled by four points from Keith Pinckney and a three-pointer each from Kyre' Hamer and Alterique Gilbert to extend the lead to 43-27 with6:05 to play in the third quarter.
Miller Grove put together an 11-0 run beginning at the four minute mark as Gilbert hit his second trey of the period to get it rolling and Kendall Williams had a pair of easy layups off turnovers. Pinckney added one more three-pointer of which the Wolverines hit 11 on the night.
Kyre' Hamer who finished with a game 25 points ended the third period and started the fourth period with a three-pointer as the lead ballooned to 24. Miller Grove would go on to lead by as much as 30 points in the fourth quarter.
Keith Pinckney finished with 20 points to join Hamer in double figures for the Wolverines who advance to face the winner of Villa Rica and Loganville which is set to play on Wednesday night.
Brandon Ingleton hit for 21 points and Dalton Satterfield added 16 for Sequoyah.
The No. 2 ranked Tucker Lady Tigers went on the road to Cobb County to take on No. 8 ranked Osborne and came away with a 48-45 victory.
Tucker led by as much as 11 points in the second half, but had to hold off Osborne with the play of Erykah Davenport and Tori Robinson who each scored 13 points. Tucker (25-4) advanced to face Salem (18-10), a 59-41 winner over Paulding County in first round play. The teams are slated to play on Friday night.
No. 4 ranked Southwest DeKalb (20-8) had to fight to knock off Sprayberry (19-11) 59-56. Miaya Crowder hit for 18 points to lead the Lady Panthers in the win as they advance to host the Villa Rica/Cedar Shoals winner on Friday.
The No. 7 ranked Stephenson Lady Jaguars (24-5) went on the road and knocked off newly crowned No. 1 Kell (22-3) 60-51 to advance to the second round. Stephenson must go on the road to Lithia Springs (20-8) which knocked off Clarke Central 53-45 on Tuesday. The two teams are scheduled to play on Friday.
The only non-Class AAAAA DeKalb team in action on Tuesday was the No. 3 ranked Redan Lady Raiders (24-2) who hosted Dalton (21-3). Redan ran away to a 73-43 win to advance to face the Fayette County/Eastside winner on Friday.
