Hall Of Famer McCrary leaves Columbia

DECATUR, Ga. -- One of Georgia's most successful high school basketball coaches has moved from courtside to the administrative office.

Dr. Phillip McCrary is leaving the job of boys basketball coach at Columbia High School to assume the job of Assistant Athletic Director for DeKalb County Schools.

For 25 years, McCrary guided the Columbia Eagles, leading them to state championships in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012. In all, McCrary's squads appeared in the state championship contest eight times and compiled a remarkable record of 546 wins and 185 defeats. Under his tutelage, more than 100 Columbia student-athletes received scholarships to Division I institutions.

McCrary's honors include Georgia Neismith Coach of the Year 2010, four-time Georgia Sports Writers Coach of the Year, four-time AJC Coach of the Year and two-time GACA Coach of the Year. This summer, he was inducted into the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame.

Columbia High School has yet to name a new boys' basketball coach.
