Emory History Minute: Candler Mansion

Emory History Minute: Candler Mansion

To celebrate Emory's 175th anniversary, Emory Report brings you a look at little-known facts about the university.

The Candler Mansion on Emory's Briarcliff campus is a beautiful yet eerie estate. Built in 1920 by Asa "Buddy" Candler, Jr., the second son of the founder of Coca-Cola, the 42 acre property once housed wild animals including four elephants: Coca, Cola, Refreshing and Delicious. In the 1960s, the mansion was turned into a mental health institute.

Atlanta Housing Authority CEO to step down

Atlanta Housing Authority CEO to step down

ATLANTA -- Renee Lewis Glover, CEO of the Atlanta Housing Authority, will leave the organization after 17 years at the helm.

According to a statement from the AHA, "the new board members appointed by Mayor Kasim Reed have made it clear that they would like to have change in leadership at the AHA, which is fully within the prerogative of the mayor and the board."

Glover and members of the board have been working "cooperatively' to come up with "mutually acceptable terms of separation and an orderly transition," the statement said.

Since Reed became Atlanta's mayor in January 2010, he began appointing board members who regularly challenged Glover's leadership and her policies in running the organization.

Before Reed was elected in November 2009, the AHA board had signed a five-year contract with Glover.

Not So Big House Principles Apply to Remodeling Projects of all Sizes

Free Educational Program on Oct. 15   The concept or movement of “Not So Big House” has entered the mainstream, but what is it and who started it? Well, what it is not about is tiny houses for everyone, or a creed of bad design in favor of tiny energy bills.   The No So Big House philosophy, in fact, embraces architectural style across the spectrum, and is a concept dedicated to homes of all … well, most sizes. It can be described as an anti-McMansion sort of trend, but it is much more positive than that.   This is a direction in home design and construction championed by Sarah Susanka, an architect by trade, that emphasizes the concept of home as haven, in scale and proportion to need, a welcoming, comfortable, usable place where space is used according to purpose, rooms flow together with subtle delineations -- well-built, light-filled and energy-efficient.

French Farmers' Market-Inspired Lavender Vanilla Caramel Flan

French Farmers' Market-Inspired Lavender Vanilla Caramel Flan

It’s been 2 years since I’ve been to France. 2 years too long. For me, France perfectly epitomizes a beautiful life. Its rich culture, classical art, immense history and chic lifestyle make it a country I’d easily live in.

And that was that plan I had committed to earlier this year. More on that later, but let’s just say my non-stop American hustle has arrested my plans in motion for the time being and so any dream of making Paris or any central France my home for an enviable amount of time is on the backburner.
