An Insight into Georgia's Happiest Camp: Camp Sunshine, Helping Children with Cancer

An Insight into Georgia's Happiest Camp: Camp Sunshine, Helping Children with Cancer

When I first heard of Camp Sunshine my mind immediately took me back to the time when my baby brother was diagnosed with cancer. I was a child by then, but I remember vividly the toll this took on my family. Looking backwards, what a difference would it have made to our family if we had participated in a program aimed to help families coping with terminal illness. Childhood cancer is a cruel disease that has a tremendous impact on the families affected. At any given time, cancer holds 10,700 American children in its grip. It robs them, and their families, of the laughter and joy that should be part of every childhood.

Bone Marrow Donor Sought for 24 Year Old Atlanta Woman

Bone Marrow Donor Sought for 24 Year Old Atlanta Woman

ATLANTA – An appeal is being made to members of Georgia’s Asian community to attend a “Cure Sonia” bone marrow donor registration drive in hopes of finding a donor match for 24-year-old Sonia Rai who has acute myelogenous leukemia.

Compatible genetic matches for bone marrow transplants typically are found among members of the same or similar racial or ethnic groups. At present one percent of National Marrow Donor Program registrants are of South Asian heritage. Given Sonia’s genetic profile, which is a hybrid of Southeast Asian and Caucasian, there is a very strong possibility that she will find a match with people from India, Hawaii, Philippines, Pakistan, Burma, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Australia.
