Regular joint meeting of DeKalb’s Greenspace and Parks committees meet Feb. 13

ATLANTA -- The joint regular meeting of the DeKalb Parks Bond Advisory Committee and the Initiative for a Green DeKalb Advisory Council will be Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 5:30 p.m. at the ONE DeKalb Resource Center located on the lower level of Northlake Mall near the Macy’s entrance, 4800 Briarcliff Road, Atlanta, GA 30345.

There will be an update on greenspace acquisitions and current parks and recreation projects.

The DeKalb Parks Bond Advisory Committee provides advice regarding the use of the proceeds of the 2001 Parks Bonds and reviews the bond proceeds expenditures in an advisory capacity. The Initiative for a Green DeKalb Advisory Council advises, advocates, and establishes a vision for an integrated greenspace system in DeKalb County.

Goodwill hosting 8 job fairs across North Ga.

DULUTH, Ga. -- Goodwill of North Georgia will hold eight job fairs Wednesday.

The fairs will give job seekers across the region a chance to connect with dozens of employers.

"Each of our career centers holds regular job fairs, but this is the first time we've combined our efforts to create a single-day impact," said Elaine Armstrong, director of public relations for Goodwill of North Georgia.

The job fairs will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Goodwill has career centers in Athens, Atlanta, Cartersville, Decatur, Duluth, Oakwood, Rome and Woodstock.

Attendees are asked to dress professionally and bring several copies of their résumés.

"We know many people start the year looking for new job opportunities. This one-day event will allow us to help them connect with employers while highlighting the myriad of resources each location offers every day," Armstrong said.

Chick-fil-A Daddy-Daughter Date Night returns in 2013

ATLANTA -- Chick-fil-A's wildly popular Daddy-Daughter Date Night will return in February.

More than 100 Atlanta- and Athens-area Chick-fil-A restaurants will host the event on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Every couple in attendance will receive an activity sheet with conversation topics and a booklet called "Continuing the Conversation," which gives the dads and daughters suggestions for getting to know each other better.

"One of Chick-fil-A's goals is to promote community connections and enrich the lives of everyone we serve," Chick-fil-A area marketing director Robin Lomax said in a statement. "We understand the importance of father-daughter relationships and want to encourage dads to take a break from busy schedules, enjoy their daughters' company over a meal and have fun."

'Amelia Bedelia' author to visit Decatur

DECATUR, Ga. -- The author of a wildly popular children's book series will visit Decatur at the end of the month.

Herman Parish will be at the Little Shop of Stories at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31.

Parish is the nephew of Peggy Parish, who started the "Amelia Bedelia" series about a scatterbrained but lovable maid. Peggy Parish passed away in 1988; her nephew took over the series in 1995.

Two new Amelia Bedelia chapter books will hit store shelves in January: Amelia Bedelia Means Business and Amelia Bedelia Unleashed.

AKA holding peace rally for middle school students

ATLANTA -- Members of metro Atlanta's chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will hold a peace rally and workshop for middle school students over the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend.

The event will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Ivy Community Center in southwest Atlanta. It is part of the 40 Days of Peace project, which aims to spread service and kindness through the country.

The peace rally and workshop will aim to teach young people about Dr. King's mission, and to raise awareness of crime and crime prevention strategies. Law enforcement members will also give an interactive presentation to encourage children to stamp out gangs and bullying.

Middle school students from several metro Atlanta counties -- Cobb, Cherokee, Clayton, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale -- are expected to participate.

ATLANTA -- A play that made its world premiere at Horizon Theatre last May will return in 2013, this time with a very fitting sponsor.

Larry Larson and Eddie Levi Lee's The Waffle Palace: Smothered, Covered & Scattered 24/7/365 will begin its encore production on Jan. 11.

Waffle House, the inspiration for the play, will sponsor its second run. To celebrate the partnership, a The Waffle Palace Meets its Muse party will be held at the Waffle House Museum in Decatur on Saturday, Jan. 12.

The cast and playwrights of The Waffle Palace will be at the sponsorship party, which begins at 12 p.m. There will also be a raffle with great prizes, including show tickets and dinner at Waffle House.
