DeKalb County Schools release financial audit | Education

DECATUR, Ga. -- The DeKalb County School district has released the forensic accounting and investigative audit requested by Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson.

The draft of the report by the firm KPMG, LLC is now available on the district's website.

Among the observations made in the audit, the firm questions the school board's approval of the elimination of 150 central office positions, but in the end, only eliminated 109 and, in fact, actually put more than 50 people back on the payroll.

"The Board approved a budget reduction on May 10, 2010, whereby the District was to eliminate Central Office positions. However, our analysis noted only 109 may have been eliminated and eventually 56 were either rehired into a different position or reassigned," said the report by KPMG.

In addition, the report found inconsistencies between how cash was disbursed and transferred among accounts and the "process certain employees indicated" when making the transactions.
