DeKalb, Fulton receive grants to fight sexual abuse

ATLANTA -- DeKalb and Fulton counties have been awarded grants for use by law enforcement agencies to combat child sexual abuse and exploitation.

The grants awarded Tuesday are administrated by the U.S. Department of Justice and Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.

Federal officials say DeKalb County will receive $496,793 and the Fulton County District Attorney's Office will receive $352,803. They say Atlanta continues to have a reputation as a center of child prostitution.

Twenty grants totaling $9.2 million are being awarded to agencies across the country.

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. -- The search is now over for a man accused of shooting a DeKalb County Police officer during a traffic stop earlier this week.

U.S. Marshals arrested 37-year-old Michael Hughey shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday. He was picked up at an America's Best Value Inn and Suites in Stockbridge and eventually booked into the DeKalb County jail.

According to his record, obtained by 11Alive's Julie Wolfe, Hughey has already been booked into the jail eight times, most recently this past February for cocaine possession and intent to sell. He's also had several weapons-related arrests and served time in Macon State Prison for aggravated assault during the 1990's.

DECATUR, Ga. -- A DeKalb County father and son have been indicted on charges linked to the murder of the son's Tucker High School classmate.

Andrea Nassos' burned body was found in the trunk of her smoldering car at Lucky Shoals Park in Gwinnett County in May.

Eighteen-year-old Boris Mejia is charged with her murder and
trying to hide her death. 

His father, Ignacio Mejia, is charged with tampering with evidence and trying to hinder his son's arrest. Investigators said the dad drove his son to Houston, Texas to help him get away.

MACON, Ga. -- Authorities say the remains of slain law school graduate Lauren Giddings were released to a Macon funeral home Tuesday for cremation.

Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said the Agnes Scott College alumna's family is preparing for a funeral service in her home state of Maryland in early August.

Police found Giddings' torso outside her apartment building on June 30. Authorities have been awaiting results of FBI lab testing that could help determine who killed and dismembered the 27-year-old recent graduate of Mercer University's law school.

Macon police Maj. Charles Stone said in a statement Tuesday that FBI officials told him their investigation is moving smoothly, but the process takes time.

Missing Wis. teen found in DeKalb

DECATUR, Ga. -- Investigators with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation found a missing Wisconsin teenager and her infant son in DeKalb County.

The 15-year-old girl vanished from her Fitchburg, Wis. home in May. The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation contacted the GBI on July 13 when they determined the girl and her child were in the Atlanta area.

The two juveniles were recovered from a hotel in DeKalb County on Friday, July 15. A laptop and cell phone were also seized for further investigation.

Police determined the girl was a commercially sexually exploited child. She was taken to DeKalb County juvenile intake, where she is awaiting transport back to Wisconsin.

Her son, who is less than a year old, was taken into the custody of DeKalb County DFCS.

DECATUR: Carjacked man shot, woman assaulted

DECATUR, Ga, -- A 16-year-old is charged with aggravated assault, armed robbery and kidnapping after DeKalb County Police say a man and woman were carjacked late Thursday night. The man was shot and the woman said she was sexually assaulted.

According to investigators, the man and woman were in a car on Canberra Drive at Devon Way at about 11:45 p.m., when two suspects forced their way into the car.

Police said the the suspects drove the man and woman around, looking for an ATM.

At some point, the man was shot, but managed to get away and contact police. He got help from a business on Covington Highway and was last listed in serious condition.

Officers canvassing the area found the woman with the car; the suspects had taken off. The woman told police she had been sexually assaulted during the ordeal.

One suspect, a 16-year-old, was later arrested. Police are still looking for a second suspect.
