Man gets life for killing pregnant girlfriend | Crime
DECATUR, Ga. -- A DeKalb County man was given two life prison sentences for gunning down his pregnant girlfriend.
Carlo Simpson was sentenced Monday in DeKalb County Superior Court. He was convicted last week of felony murder, feticide, aggravated assault, and firearm possession.
Prosecutors said Simpson, now 25, shot Shikhira Dunson to death in a driveway on Eagles Nest Circle on Feb. 18, 2013. The victim had just turned 20 and was about 22 weeks pregnant. She and Simpson also had a baby son.
Dunson's mother Johnnee addressed the court, saying, "There's not one single day that goes by that I don't have a thought of my daughter. What was once an amazing, beautiful, loving and gentle soul is now and forever more just ashes in the cold dark ground."
Johnnee Dunson is raising the child her daughter had with Simpson.
"His first birthday, his first steps, his first words were moments not shared with his mother," she said of the now-2-year-old boy. "Their first Christmas together was their last Christmas together -- all of this because of Carlo Simpson's cowardly act of rage, aggression, obsession and stupidity."
