Decatur residents to speak out about Walmart at Feb. 23 Community Forum

DECATUR --  (submitted by Good Growth Dekalb) Walmart has plans of opening a location in The Surburban Plaza in Decatur.  This has stirred a most vocal contingent of residents that are against this proposal and are fighting the coming of Walmart.  Below is their latest release:

Neighbors of Suburban Plaza Shopping Center will have their first clear opportunity to "have their say" at a Community Forum hosted by Good Growth DeKalb on Thursday, Feb 23 at 7:00 p.m. at North Decatur Presbyterian Church (611 Medlock Road, at the Corner of Medlock and North Decatur Roads). The goal of the meeting is for residents of the city of Decatur and neighborhoods surrounding Suburban Plaza, where Selig Enterprises has proposed building a 149,000 square foot Walmart Supercenter, to weigh in on the development and share their vision for better community development.

DORAVILLE | High-rise owners at odds over paying light bill to restore power

DORAVILLE, Ga. (WXIA) -- The problems are just beginning for the residents at the high-rise Presidential Condo Hotel in DeKalb County.

Tuesday, Georgia Power cut off electricity to the complex after they say the bill had not been paid. Wednesday, the DeKalb County Fire Marshal deemed the structure unsafe to live in, ordering residents on all 14 floors to move out, without a working elevator.

Many angry residents said they have no place to go, and that they are the ones stuck in the middle of the dispute.

"Now we're stuck trying to get our stuff out, along with trying to get everything packed. The two owners are fighting and we're caught in the middle," said one resident.

DRUID HILLS | Credit card scam hits small business

DRUID HILLS | Credit card scam hits small business

DRUID HILLS, Ga. (WXIA) -- A new credit card scam is sweeping through small businesses in DeKalb County.

The scammers have been working their way through small businesses in parts of DeKalb County, trying to steal sensitive information from merchant credit card readers.

The scammers go into a store, claiming to represent a bank or credit card company. They tell store owners or managers that they want to change the credit card decals in the store windows.

One shop owner, Mike Morrison of Wings Camera, says he did not suspect a thing.

"On a regular basis as a retailer you will have people come by your store who want to change card stickers in the window. The next morning when I came to work I realized that the sticker had a union pay at the top of it which I had never seen before," Morrison said.

Wild Heaven debuts 'Let There Be Light' beer

ATLANTA -- Wild Heaven Craft Beers will soon compete in the local light beer arena with its fourth beer hitting certain Taco Macs this week.

The Decatur, Ga.-based craft brewer's take on light beer is called "Let There Be Light," and has 4.7 percent alcohol by volume. Wild Heaven said its new beer has a complexity most light beers don't have thanks to two rare hops -- Nelson Sauvin and Sorachi Ace -- plus orange peel.

Let There Be Light debuts as the featured February "Beer of The Month" at several Georgia Taco Mac locations: Atlanta Metropolis (Peachtree Street), Virginia-Highland, Suwanee, Alpharetta, Cumming, Perimeter, Buford, Kennesaw, Newnan, Roswell (Crabapple) and Marietta (Dallas Highway).

DEKALB | 'Undesirable' businesses not welcome in county

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb County Commissioner Lee May stood at a busy intersection Friday evening and pointed to what he called undesirable businesses cluttering up, even endangering, the neighborhood.

"You have a liquor store right here, and behind the liquor store you have a grocery store that sells beer and wine.... You have across the street a gas station that sells beer and wine. On the other side of the intersection you have a drug store that sells beer and wine. You have a proliferation of alcohol outlets" at just that one intersection.

And it's a county-wide problem, he said.

This week the county commission approved May's proposal to limit how many additional "undesirable" businesses will be allowed to move into the county, and where they'll be allowed to move in.
