Dekalb County Schools Designate January 2011 as Bullying Awareness Month

Atlanta, GA--  (Submitted by Cohn&Wolfe)

The DeKalb County School System will on Jan. 3, 2011, join parents, students and community leaders to launch “Bullying Awareness Month,” a 30-day campaign to highlight the DeKalb County School System’s enhanced policy aimed at reducing incidents of bullying. During the Jan. 3, 2011, Work Session and Meeting, the DeKalb County Board of Education will vote on a proclamation recognizing January 2011 as "Bullying Awareness Month."

The new DeKalb School System bullying policy includes additional prevention education for principals, teachers, students and parents, updated policies on online or “cyber” bullying, updated policies on hazing and a coordinated outreach to raise awareness in the community about preventing bullying.

During "Bullying Awareness Month," there will be weekly themes, and schools will be encouraged to develop activities such as student essay and poster contests related to these topics:

 • Week of January 2nd - BULLYING AWARENESS MONTH

 • Week of January 9th - STOP CYBERBULLYING

 • Week of January 16th - STOP HAZING

 • Week of January 23rd - BE SENSITIVE TO OTHERS

On Jan. 31, 2011, students will be asked to sign a pledge indicating they will refrain from participating in and/or supporting bullying. Initiatives to stop bullying will be ongoing throughout the school year.
