Student speaks out after in-school attack


DECATUR, Ga. (WXIA) -- Franklin Butler said he saw the student approach out of the corner of his eye, but never realized what he was about to do.

"I thought he was walking by to go to another desk," Franklin said.

Voters: Yes to Tucker, no LaVista Hills


DECATUR, Ga. -- Voters appeared to reject a bid to create a new city in LaVista Hills on Tuesday.

Voters narrowly said no to LaVista Hills' bid for incorporation. Out of more than 13,000 votes cast, the measure was defeated by less than 150 votes.

 The leader of the LaVista Hills Alliance, Mary Kay Woodworth, said opponents of cityhood made it "a partisan issue."

The result was different in DeKalb County's other proposed city. With 100% of the precincts reporting, the bid to create the city of Tucker was ahead 74% to 26%. 

Voters overwhelmingly approved an act that revises the DeKalb County Board of Ethics.

The map was all-important at precincts deciding cityhood questions for LaVista Hills and Tucker.

New details emerge in successful search for 3 missing children


CLARKSTON, Ga. -- After hours of frantic searching, three Clarkston children who went missing Thursday night have been found.

11Alive had the only crew capture the moment that the children emerged from a neighbor’s home.

Cameras wee rolling and spotted the kids even before police knew where they were.

Those children are home safe now, but that comes after a night full of searching and praying.

DeKalb County grand jury hears testimony on December shooting


DEKALB COUNTY, Ga - A civil grand jury heard Tuesday from the police officer accused of killing a DeKalb County man last December.

According to an attorney for the family allowed to hear the testimony, Officer Joseph Pitts said he was "scared" when he shot Kevin Davis.

Davis was killed after he called 911 for help when he found that his girlfriend had been attacked.His girlfriend said he was holding a gun when police arrived, thinking the attacker had returned.

 

Police: Woman found run over in DeKalb


DECATUR, Ga. -- Authorities in DeKalb County are investigating after the body of a woman was found run over in the middle of a road.

Deadly DeKalb County apartment fire ruled arson


DECATUR, Ga. – Officials say a deadly apartment fire in DeKalb County was arson.

The early morning fire at the Park on Covington apartment complex claimed the life of 37-eyar-old Tony Hubert. A woman was seriously injured when she jumped from the second floor to escape the flames.

Investigators said there is an active criminal investigation ongoing.

Before trick or treating | Check sex offender database


DECATUR, GA (WXIA) -- The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office is making the rounds on Halloween to registered sex offenders' homes to make sure they are following the rules. 

Unlike some jurisdictions, DeKalb only requires that registered offenders verify they are in compliance with the law. As part of that compliance, they are not permitted to decorate the exteriors of their homes to attract the attention of trick-or-treaters and not opening their doors to youngsters on Halloween.
