DeKalb Educators Participate in Discovery Education Science Institute

From October 4-7, DeKalb County School District educators Beth Kyle, an early childhood coordinator, and Christopher Robinson, a K-12 science coordinator, attended the exclusive Discovery Education Science Institute at Discovery Communications’ global headquarters in Silver Spring, Md.  

National School Lunch Week at Mary Jane Lin Elementary

This week, more than 50 celebrity chefs will serve nutritious meals to students in Atlanta Public School cafeterias throughout the district Oct. 13 to 15 during National School Lunch Week.

At APS, the week will highlight “Fresh Pick” options of locally grown fruits and vegetables that are served on a daily basis to APS students.

On October 13th, the Atlanta Hawks Executive Chef Bradley Rouse will serve students at Mary Jane Lin Elementary School (586 Chandler Park Dr., NE

The event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.

Saturday Voting for DeKalb Residents

In an effort to increase DeKalb County voter turnout, the DeKalb County Office of Elections (4380 Memorial Drive, Decatur) will be open for Early Voting on Saturday, Oct. 16 and 23, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The poll is currently open for early voting Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5p.m.

During Advance Voting week, Oct. 25-29, four additional sites with extended hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Mayor, Police Chief Join ATL Pride Parade

ATLANTA -- In the heart of Atlanta, on the city's most prominent street, there was no holding back as tens of thousands took part in the Atlanta Pride Parade. 

"There's always room for growth, love and finding common bonds," said parade participant DeeJay Johnson.

This year's parade comes at a critical time for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in Atlanta and across the country.

"I'm sure you're familiar with the rash of suicides," said Atlanta Pride Committee Chairman Cain Williamson. "Don't ask, don't tell just failed to be overturned. So visibility is extremely important for full social and legal equality for GLBT and individuals of all stripes."

There were a handful of protesters among the thousands who lined the parade route.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed took part, along with Atlanta's new police chief, George Turner.

Common Cause Hosts, State School Superintendant Forum

WABE’s Denis O’Hayer will serve as a moderator at the State School Superintendant Forum, on October 14th at 7:30 p.m. This forum is hosted by Common Cause Georgia and will be held at Druid Hills Presbyterian Church (1026 Ponce de Leon Ave. NE).

Voters are encouraged to come out and hear what the candidates, running for this statewide office, have to say; and to listen and participate during this 90 minute open discussion. 

Lee Walton's Presents: Momentary Performances

Check out Momentary Performances, a concept created by popular Atlanta experiementalist, Lee Walton.

Momentary Performances is a series of 8 different choreographed performances that will take place in 8 different locations in Atlanta. Over the course of a month, each performance will occur 4 times. 

This project stems from Walton’s interest in the subtle, everyday actions of public life.  Through the simple of use of vinyl text installed in public space, everyday actions are formalized and made able to taking on a new life.  Through this amplification, intimate everyday occurrences become celebrated events and blur the line between real-life and theater.
