Testimony on secret recordings in Ellis trial

DECATUR, GA (WXIA) – Monday was a day of testimony about secret recordings and so-called uncomfortable conversations in the Burrell Ellis retrial.


Ellis, the now-suspended DeKalb County CEO, is accused of intimidating county vendors into giving him campaign contributions in exchange for county contracts.

"It was the classic pay-to-play scenario," said Brandon Cummings, while on the stand.

That's how Cummings described what he repeatedly called an uncomfortable phone conversation with Ellis.

Ellis trial: Vendor says he caved to strong-arm pressure

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – Testimony continued on day three of the corruption trial of embattled DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis on Thursday.

Ellis is accused of strong arming county vendors to donate to his 2012 re-election campaign and threatening to kill their contracts if they didn't.

On Thursday, Greg Sheely, of the National Property Institute, took the stand. Sheely said his wife, Trina, got a call from Ellis asking for a campaign donation. She said she'd get back to the CEO, but didn't.

Ellis trial day two: Secret recordings and uncomfortable meetings

DECATUR, GA (WXIA) -- Day two of testimony against suspended DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis has come to an end, and it centered around secret recordings, and a woman who described an uncomfortable meeting with Ellis about campaign contributions.


That woman is Trina Shealey. Her company, NPI, held a contract with the county.

Burrell Ellis retrial gets underway

DECATUR, GA (WXIA) -- DeKalb County's embattled CEO, Burrell Ellis, is hoping the second time is the charm at his second trial. He is accused of extorting campaign contributions from companies that did business with the county.


Day one of this trial, and what everyone is commenting on is how quickly things are moving this time around.

Jury selected in Burrell Ellis retrial

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- A jury has been selected in the retrial of suspended DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis.

Ellis is accused of extorting campaign contributions from companies that do business with the county. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.


After nearly a week, a jury was finally seated on Friday. The jury is split evenly between men and women. Five of those jurors are white; seven are black.

Opening statements will begin on Tuesday.

Man found shot to death in SUV in DeKalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- A man in his 20's was found shot to death behind the wheel of an SUV in DeKalb County Monday morning.

The victim's name has not been released. His body was discovered at around midnight outside the Kingstown Apartments in the 1600 block of Line Street.

DeKalb County Police Lt. Mark Lavigne said investigators believe the man was shot near the 1625 building. The victim tried to drive away, but crashed his SUV into another car.

No one has been arrested. Lavigne said police are canvassing the neighborhood and looking for possible witnesses.
