DeKalb County school evacuated after fire


DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – An electrical fire forced the evacuation of a DeKalb County school on Thursday.

Officials said the small fire disrupted power to Columbia High School.  Nine and 10th graders were sent to Towers High School, while 11th and 12th graders went to Columbia Middle School. 

All the students were eventually brought back to Columbia High to be dismissed for the day.

DeKalb police investigating double shooting


DECATUR, Ga. -- DeKalb County police are investigating a double shooting that happened early Sunday morning.

The incident happened on the 2400 block of Candler Road near an apartment complex around 1:30 a.m.

Police said two men were shot and sent to an area hospital.

Investigators are not yet clear on a motive but the incident is under investigation.

Family mourns dog killed in police shooting


DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Residents of a home mistakenly entered by police are speaking out about the incident that left a homeowner and a police officer injured.

On Monday, DeKalb County Police Officer Travis Jones and homeowner Chris McKinley were hurt in the incident at a home on Boulderwoods Drive. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Jones was shot by a fellow officer's gun. The shooting also left McKinley's dog dead.

Police were responding to a 911 call about a suspicious person in the neighborhood.

Lottery winner cashes in $1 million old ticket


 

ATLANTA -- Sixty-five-year-old Robert Pitchford woke up and went to work every weekday this summer not knowing he was a millionaire. 

Pitchford lives in Birmingham, Alabama, but frequently plays the Powerball. He bought a ticket June 24th from the QuickTrip on Lawrenceville Highway, and promptly forgot about it. 

"I said,'Oh really! What?!" 

 


Officers involved in shooting at DeKalb home identified


DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – Authorities have identified three DeKalb County Police officers involved in a shooting Monday night.

Officer Travis Jones was injured by a fellow officer’s gunfire, according to a preliminary finding by the Georgia Bureau Investigation

The other officers involved in the confusing scene Monday night were identified as Quhanna Lloyd and Timothy Harden, the GBI said.

GBI, DA will probe why DeKalb cops opened fire in home


DEKALB COUNTY, GA -- Investigators from the DeKalb County District Attorney's office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will probe why two DeKalb police officers entered a home and opened fire on the homeowner Monday night.

Police were responding to a 911 call about a suspicious person in the neighborhood. A GBI statement said the DeKalb officers entered the home at 1500 Boulderwoods Drive and shot the homeowner in the leg. They also shot and killed his dog

Neighbors identify the homeowners as Chris and Leah McKinley, the parents of a 1-year-old boy. Mr. McKinley was shot in the leg, treated at a local hospital and released. He was not charged.
