Tree crashes into apartment; resident says a looter struck, too


 

DECATUR, Ga. -- A Decatur man had a really bad morning. 

Abdelaziz Jertala came home from work just after midnight to find his home damaged by a tree that had fallen during the night's storms. He had been working since around noon that day, and never got a call about the tree.

"When it happened, no one was home. I was working. I finished at 12:00 midnight.  So, when I arrived here, I found this had happened," he said. "Nobody said anything to me."

Woman charged after shooting burglary suspect


DECATUR, Ga. – Police have filed charges against a DeKalb County woman who shot a man she said broke into her home.

The incident happened inside a gated apartment complex off of Woodberry Place on Tuesday.

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said that when she got home from work around midnight, a man was trying to aggressively open her door. The woman said that she and her husband opened the door and the man began "talking out the side of his head."

Around 2:35 a.m., the woman said she was awakened by a loud noise. When she got up to check, she said the front door of her home was kicked in. The woman that as she went to retrieve her gun, she came face-to-face with the man in her closet. At that time, the woman said her husband fired a shot at the man.

The woman said the man fell on the floor and then took off.

Family of teen found dead in gym mat holds rally; investigation continues


DECATUR, Ga. -- The family of Kendrick Johnson says they’re positive they’ll get justice for their son.

Johnson was found dead in a rolled up gym mat in Valdosta more than 3 years ago.

On Saturday, the family came to Decatur to remember Johnson’s life.

24 residents displaced by Clarkston apartment fire


CLARKSTON, Ga. -- The Red Cross is working to provide food, clothing and shelter for 24 DeKalb County residents after an apartment fire – and that number is expected to grow.

Officials with the Red Cross confirmed the fire at Northern Pines Apartments Friday night.

The complex in the 700 block of Northern Avenue in Clarkston suffered damage to 12 units. Caseworkers are continuing to work with families, Red Cross officials said.

Driver rescued from swollen creek in Decatur



DECATUR, Ga. – Firefighters in DeKalb County rescued a woman after her car overturned in a swollen creek Wednesday morning.

According to DeKalb Fire Capt. Eric Jackson, crews responded to the intersection of Snapfinger Road and Snapfinger Circle in Decatur around 8 a.m. after reports that a car had entered a creek swollen from rain.

Property management threatens to evict condo owners over water bills


DEKALB COUNTY — Residents at a DeKalb County condo are facing possible eviction after the complex’s management company says it can’t afford overdue water bills.

Letters demanding residents to pay up appeared in the hallways of the Fontaine West Condo complex. The notice told people who live in the there their water bill was $130,000 overdue, and if they didn’t pay up, they’d be kicked out. 

But condo owners there are wondering why that’s the case, when they pay $220 every month to their property management company, who’s then supposed to pay the bills.

“It's not just frustrating. It's heartbreaking,” said Lynice Jackson. “There are so many people who live in this community.”
